2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk SUV and Off-Road Reviews
2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk – A Jeep will always make the difference in offroad. It does not matter whether it is a practical SUV or a hyper-specialist 4×4 because the car that finds a “j” on the bonnet will always be born with the genes of the off-road etched in the DNA. Take the new compass, for example. She is a compact SUV, designed to rival Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen Tiguan, just to mention two of the most successful models. But not for this he gave up the 2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk, the one for lovers of the hard and pure off-road.
It’s not just aesthetic. As with the other models of the range that envisage this set-up, the 2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk variant of the compass can boast a series of tricks designed specifically for driving on a 4WD. It starts from the front, which has a different conformation than the more peaceful limited. The bumper, cut off in the lower part, allowed to obtain an angle of attack of 30 °, while the one of output at the rear is 33.6 °. American engineers have also increased the floor height by 2.5 cm compared to the traditional compass, reaching a total value of 21.6 cm. And there is no shortage of all-season tires (with a real spare wheel instead of the kit or wheel) and a nice red painted tow hook, which makes a lot of “adventure”. In order not to disappoint those who watch the substance are also provided steel bumper plates to protect the vital mechanical organs that emerge from the underbody.
2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk Redesign and New Features
What’s more than a traditional compass. The platform remains the “small-wide 4×4” of the younger sister Renegade, from which the compass also inherits the same system for the integral traction. The 2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk version is equipped with the most thrust variant of this 4×4, called Active Drive low, which can boast a final reduction ratio of 20:1, and the function “4WD low”, developed to simulate the action of a reduced gear. At this juncture, the compass takes advantage of the first gear, short, of the 9-speed automatic gearbox, without ever switching to the second. This function, combined with the 380 nm of 2.0 MultiJet torque from 170 hp, guarantees a powerful cue with which to face even the most accentuated gradients. As if that were not enough, the Selec-terrain of the 2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk gains the “rock” mode, which is added to the traditional ones (auto, snow, mud and sand) to offer a specific calibration for the most terrain passages. In addition, this arrangement also includes the hill-descent control, really comfortable on terrain with strong slopes and poor adhesion, where it is essential not to lock the wheels.
Where the normal SUV is stop. During our short test drive we were able to face a rather challenging off-road route, precluded to the more traditional SUVs, including the “normal” Compass limited. With the 2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk, however, they have not stopped even the most tough climbs, scattered with stones and deep furrows. The integral drive is capable of sending up to 2,000 nm of torque at the rear, but if necessary it can transfer also 100% of the torque to the single wheel, simulating the behaviour of a lockable mechanical differential. To complete the standard equipment, do not forget the excellent suspension (Macpherson front and Chapman behind), which offer a maximum excursion of 20 cm.
You have to wait for it. While the excellent off-road performance convinces all the way, on the other side there are some limits, which are common the to traditional compass. The setting of the typically American cockpit, for example, must deal with hard plastics and assemblies that are not always flawless. And the trunk, compared to the direct competitors, appears more cramped. Excellent, however, the soundproofing, as well as the coupling between the automatic and the proven turbo diesel 170 CV, which on the road allowed us to travel about 14 km/L (according to the computer on board). To see the 2019 Jeep Compass Trailhawk in the dealership will have to have a little patience, since in Italy the imports will begin only in the coming weeks. This is why the list prices have not yet been announced. It is likely that they will not be more than 39,750 euros of the full optional limited version.
